Description
The Asanoha (Hemp Leaf) tablecloth is a stunning piece that brings the elegant simplicity of traditional Japanese design to your dining table. A classic motif symbolizing growth, resilience, and good health, the Asanoha pattern has been used for centuries to bring good fortune and a touch of timeless beauty to the home.
This tablecloth features a design that is inspired by the clean, geometric aesthetic of traditional Sashiko stitching, with no embroidery. The intricate Asanoha pattern is meticulously rendered to capture the pure, meditative beauty of the original craft. Its minimalist elegance makes it a versatile piece that complements both modern and traditional decor.
These tie-dye pieces come from a Bai village in Dali, Yunnan. This is an ancient craft with a history of a thousand years, which can be traced back to the Eastern Han Dynasty and has been passed down through families to this day.
The creation of every piece is a gift from time and nature. A single tie-dye piece requires 10 to 20 steps, including meticulous tying, soaking, and multiple dyeings. The whole process takes two weeks to a month, depending on the complexity of the pattern and climate conditions.
The soul of this craft comes from the natural indigo dye vat. The dye is mainly made from locally grown Indigofera plants (sometimes also Isatis root). It is not a simple dye bucket, but a living ecosystem that artisans tend to with great care, like nurturing a child. They feed it with natural “nutrients” and maintain its activity based on temperature, humidity, and sunlight. For this reason, every tie-dye piece is unique; it carries the distinct imprint of that day and that season, which cannot be replicated by industrial production.
