A Living Piece of History

This isn’t just a piece of fabric; it’s a living piece of history. This authentic Xiabu (ramie cloth), a name derived from China’s ancient Xia Dynasty, carries a thousand-year-old legacy. Its story is woven into the very fibers of this cloth, a timeless tradition passed down through generations of artisans in the mountains of Dali, Yunnan.

The Art of Making ‘XIABU’

The creation of a single piece of ‘Xiabu’ is a meticulous and labor-intensive process that can only be done by hand. The ramie plant is harvested, its fibers are carefully separated, and then painstakingly “degummed” in a multi-day process to remove natural impurities. The fibers are then spun into yarn by hand, and finally woven into cloth on traditional looms.

This entire process involves over 70 complex steps, a testament to the dedication of the master artisans who create it. It is a slow, rhythmic dance between nature and human skill, where every single thread is infused with a deep sense of care and heritage that modern industrial processes simply cannot replicate.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

We’ve taken the extra care to put our pieces through multiple thorough washes to minimize the risk of color transfer. This way you can rest assured that these textiles are ready to become a part of your daily life.

Using indigo and non-toxic dyes lets us create textile works that will age gracefully over time. For optimal longevity please consider the following recommendations:

• Handwash in lukewarm water with mild detergent (optional)
• Avoid direct and repeated rubbing against light surfaces or other fabrics to minimize color transfer
• If using a washing machine choose a gentle setting without spinning
• Best drip flat dry in the shade
• Iron inside out on low heat with steam, best while slightly damp
