Description
The Wōtuǒ Spiral: A Symbol of the Sacred Maple Tree
In Hmong culture, the intricate spiral pattern, known locally as “Wōtuǒ,” is a sacred symbol rooted in their worship of the maple tree. Revered as the guardian of the village, a majestic maple stands at the head of every Miao community, and its people visit it annually to pay their respects.
The spiral’s design is a direct representation of the maple tree’s annual rings. This visual language, composed of elegant curved lines, geometric shapes, and a multitude of dots, conveys a sense of fullness, fluidity, and completeness. It embodies a unique aesthetic where the art and meaning are intrinsically linked.
Wearing a piece with the Wōtuǒ pattern is believed to provide protection, health, and peace. It is not merely an artistic garment, but a living connection to their ancestral land and a story of nature’s timeless cycle.
Batik is a traditional “wax-resist” dyeing technique, which uses melted beeswax and special wax knives to draw intricate patterns on cotton or silk. These batik pieces are made by a family of artisans from the Hmong ethnic group in Guizhou, where the craft has been a cherished heritage for over two thousand years.
The process of making batik is a long one, involving a dozen or more distinct steps. The many processes of drawing with wax, dyeing from the lightest to the darkest color, and finally melting the wax can take up to several weeks or even months to complete.
